ABOUT THE COOLEY MIDDLE SCHOOL BAND

When Robert C. Cooley Middle School opened in 2000, the band had less than thirty sixth and seventh grade students. Since then, the band has grown to over one hundred and twenty students consisting of three periods of band plus a before-school Jazz Band.
The Cooley Concert Bands and Jazz Band have performed throughout the community including: The Hurricane Katrina Relief Benefit Concert at Woodcreek High School, Roseville Arts Faire, Red Ribbon Contest Dinner, Safeway Grand Opening, California Readers Convention, Kaiser Permanente's "Thrive" Event, the Blue Line Gallery, the Roseville Relay for Life, as well as numerous school concerts, rallies, and various other events. In 2007 they were invited to perform a joint concert with the Sacramento State Concert Band in the CSUS recital hall. More recently, in June 2009, the Advanced Band and Jazz Band were invited to play at UC Davis' Mondavi Center for the Arts with the UC Davis Concert Band. In April 2009 they hosted a concert featuring special guests, the Southern Oregon University Jazz Band led by Dr. Martin Behnke, along with the jazz bands from Roseville and Woodcreek High Schools. The Cooley Band has received grants from the Performing Arts of Roseville over the past two years to host a combined concert with the Roseville Community Concert Band. In April 2010, the Cooley Band played the Star Spangled Banner to open the Sacramento River Cats game against the Reno Aces at Raley Field.
Numerous Cooley students have participated in the California Music Educator's Association (CMEA) Middle School and Sixth Grade Honor Band and the California Band Director's Association (CBDA) All-State Honor Band. The bands have participated in many local and regional music festivals including the Golden Empire Music Festival, Oakmont Band Festival, Woodcreek Jazz Festival, Sac State Jazz Festival, Folsom Jazz Festival, and Reno Jazz Festival, earning Excellent and Superior scores. They took seventh place at the 2010 Reno Jazz Festival, sixth place at the 2010 Folsom Jazz Festival, second place at the 2009 Woodcreek Jazz Festival as well as third place at both the 2007, 2008 and 2010 Woodcreek Jazz Festivals, and fourth place at the 2005 Golden Empire Jazz Festival at CSU Sacramento.
