JAZZ BAND

The Cooley Jazz Band meets during Cooley's Enrichment ("E" period) Study Center period which meets for approximately 30 minutes, four days a week. The Advanced Jazz Band additionally meets before school three times a week from 8:10 AM - 8:50 AM on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. All Jazz Band members must be currently enrolled in one of Cooley's three band periods (Beginning, Intermediate or Advanced Bands) to be eligible to participate. Auditions may be required to keep the Advanced Jazz Band at the appropriate instrumentation. Because class time is mostly spent on ensemble work, a strong commitment to individual practice outside of the class is essential for all students.

The Cooley Jazz Band performs many times throughout the year including Cooley's Fall and Spring Concerts, area jazz festivals (Sac State, Folsom, Woodcreek and Reno Festivals) as well as possible rallies and other school and community events. Notable past performances in the community include the
Roseville Arts Faire, Safeway grand opening, Red Ribbon Contest Dinner, the Blue Line Gallery in downtown Roseville, Kaiser Permenante's "THRIVE" day, and the California Readers Convention. The Cooley Jazz Band took part in the 2008 and 2009 Reno Jazz Festivals and received Excellent scores, finishing in the top half of their division both years. The Jazz band took seventh place at the 2010 Reno Jazz Festival, sixth place at the 2010 Folsom Jazz Festival, second place at the 2009 Woodcreek Jazz Festival receiving Superior scores, third place at both the 2010, 2008 and 2007 Woodcreek High School Jazz Festivals and fourth place at the 2005 Golden Empire Jazz Festival at CSU Sacramento. In April 2009 the Cooley Jazz Band hosted the Southern Oregon University Jazz Band led by Dr. Martin Behnke. They performed a joint concert which also featured the Roseville High School and Woodcreek High School Jazz Bands.

Performances are often added throughout the year as opportunities arise.
